Boon Tong Kee's Signature Boiled Chicken

Boon Tong Kee's Signature Boiled Chicken

After our visit to the recently concluded Manila International Book Fair, my boys and I went to the Mall of Asia to look for a restaurant for our very late lunch. The consensus was to go and get an order (or two) of Boon Tong Kee's famous Signature Boiled Chicken and Chicken Rice. We were starving!

Mr. Thian Boon Hua started serving Cantonese Chicken Rice at his small stall in Chinatown in Singapore in 1979. It gained popularity immediately because of the silky white sauce chicken rice and excellent service. The company expanded in 1999 and included home-style cooked for or Zi Char.

I'm just gonna go ahead and spill it out already - yes, their Signature Boiled Chicken is delicious beyond compare! It is the best we've ever had (restaurant style) in Manila.

Boon Tong Kee claims that their technique in cooking their chicken is far different from the Hainanese style. They dip the chicken in icy cold water right after boiling which makes it extra juicy, tender, and smooth. The poaching liquid it comes with gives the chicken the extra flavor that makes the dish very irresistible! You can do without the other sauces, actually. It's that good!

The aroma of the rice (boiled in chicken stock, pandan leaves, ginger, and garlic) delivered on its promise. I finished two orders easily.....and I'm on a diet.

J7 (youngest son), ordered the Fried Spare Ribs with Zhen Jiang Sauce because of the thumbs up icon on the menu. We give it a thumbs up too! The beef is well-marinated and fall-off-the-bone tender! It would be better if they had less fat though. Other than that, it's delicious!

We love the taste of Boon Tong Kee's Cereal Prawns eventhough the prawns itself were a bit tough and rubbery.

The slow service was heavily compensated by the quality of the dishes. The first dish was served after 20 minutes or so. All in all, we were really satisfied.
