5 Things Kids Can Learn From Watching Pawn Stars

Pawn Stars Rick Harrison, Richard “The Old Man” Harrison, Corey “Big Hoss” Harrison, Austin “Chumlee” Russel

Your assumption of me having a strong preference for one of the most-watched reality sitcom in North America based on this post's title is wrong. I don't like Pawn Stars. I love it! My two boys and my husband share the same appreciation for History Channel's big hit. Actually, they are bigger fans.

Each episode is highly interesting and the characters {Rick Harrison, Richard “The Old Man” Harrison, Corey “Big Hoss” Harrison, Austin “Chumlee” Russel} are all very fascinating in their own unique ways.

In spite of the obvious double entendre in the show's title, the show is kid-friendly and they can actually learn a couple of good things from watching Pawn Stars.

History 101

Being a voracious reader that he is, Pawn Star's big boss, Rick Harrison, gives free history education to the viewers. He eloquently explains each piece that they're about to acquire or have acquired. They also have guest experts from different fields that give background information on each item. Both my boys are history junkies, so this is the part of the show they get excited about the most.

Business Skills

Pawn shop is a business, and the big three always remind their viewers that they are in the business to make money. However, they don't just do any kind of business. They teach kids how to make an honest kind of earning. Pawn Stars show the kids how to make money without ripping someone off through reasonable dealings.

Social Skills

Pawn Stars display a few good social skills {verbal and non-verbal} that kids can benefit from. The characters are friendly guys that demonstrate kindness to their clientele; even to those that have offensive behaviors. They show kids how to communicate properly and how to be confident in doing so.

Family Ties

The family-run business provides an interesting emphasis on the value and importance of family. Viewers can clearly see the love shared between the Old Man, Rick, and Corey despite their spats. One could also see the extent of love they give to Chumlee. Despite his setbacks and blunders, they do treat him like a real family member.

Fun

The show gives a lot of fun to its viewers! Chumlee is the well-known comic of the show, but, it is the Old Man's sarcastic behavior that cracks us up pretty good! It is a light, feel-good show that both educates and entertains. It shows us that {a handful of} reality shows can be spuriously good!
