Miss Philippines, Janine Tugonon, was named first runner-up in the recently concluded Miss Universe 2012 held in Las Vegas, Nevada. Tugonon is the only Asian who was included in the Top 10 of the said beauty pageant.
Janine Tugonon possesses the qualities that Ronald Oliver calls "a lethal combination": beauty and brains. Tugonon, a cum laude graduate, confidently showed her brain power during the question and answer portion. She was asked a question from Twitter that was read by famed photographer and former America's Next Top Model judge, Nigel Barker.
Barker asked, "Should
speaking English be a prerequisite to being Miss Universe as an international
ambassador?" Janine astutely replied, “For me, being Miss Universe is not just about knowing how
to speak a specific language. It’s being able to influence and inspire other
people. So whatever language you have, as long as your heart is to serve and
you have a strong mind to show to people, then you can be Miss Universe.”
Janine looked every inch the beauty queen as she did her famous "Cobra Walk" on stage in a shimmering powder blue pleated gown by Alfredo Barraza.
Although the elusive Miss Universe crown has not been attained yet, it seems that the Philippines continues to have a good streak with the pageant. This is the third consecutive year that the Miss Philippines garnered a place in the Miss Universe pageant.
Janine attributed her winning to God. “My Savior fought and won the battle for me,” she said.
