The things Tilda Swinton will do for art.
The Chronicles of Narnia actress' latest performance is not at all surprising - coming from her, it's definitely not. Swinton is known for her eccentricity. She's an artist, so she gets a pass. Michelangelo said it best: "I dare affirm that any artist... who has nothing singular,
eccentric, or at least reputed to be so, in his person, will never become a
superior talent."
Swinton's installation at MoMA {The Museum of Modern Art} is called "The Maybe". The art is her, in the flesh, feigning sleep on a single bed encased in glass. I don't know where she got her inspiration from, but the similarity to those saints inside glass-encased tombs at churches is quite evident, don't you think?
The live art piece debuted at the Serpentine Gallery in 1995 and at the Museo Barracco the following year. It is a collaboration between the 52 year old actress and her good friend, Cornelia Parker.
Swinton will go to MoMA to do her "thing" at unannounced times. She is expected to perform -sleep or whatever - for six more times until the end of this year.
