As they say, "you are what you eat"; and what you eat can and will affect your health big time. We don't need any statistics for this one. It's a known fact. Various diseases arise from unhealthy eating habits.
I do eat like a horse from time to time, but I try to eat as much healthy stuff as I can as well. The delicious kind of healthy food; not the ones that taste like wet paper mash with glue. That's my hard limit.
From the extensive list of "superfoods" that we have right now, I regularly eat these eight that I will be introducing to you in a minute. They've been around for a long time. You've probably eaten some of them without knowing that they have superpowers.
Oh, and one more thing, they taste good!
1/Spinach
Superpower: I should've listened to Popeye and ate more of this when I was younger. This superfood contains powerful antioxidants that can prevent various types of cancer. It's a heart-friendly food that prevents cholesterol from oxidizing, and is packed with Vit. K, calcium, and magnesium for healthy bones!
2/Avocado
Superpower: A favorite since childhood! I love chopping them up in small pieces and mixing it with milk and muscovado. Did you know that avocados can reduce stroke risk, aids in weight loss, smoothens the skin, prevent birth defects (e.g. Spina Bifida), and can regulate blood pressure?
3/Quinoa
Superpower: I just found out about this superfood late last year. The Incas, apparently, refer to this as the "mother of all grains", and here's why: it's high in fiber and proteins; prevents migraine attacks because of its magnesium properties; and has tissue healing properties due to lysine.
4/Cranberries
Superpower: Cranberries are famous for its UTI-fighting power. Women are more aware of this since we are prone to UTI than men due our smaller urethra. Aside from that, cranberries lowers bad cholesterol, prevent kidney stones, improves metabolism, and prevents dental problems.
5/Apple
Superpower: An apple a day just might keep the doctor away! Here's why: they can enhance mental health, decrease diabetes risk, lowers cholesterol and reduces risk for artery-clogging plaques, detoxifies the liver, prevent cataracts and brightens teeth!
6/Walnuts
Superpower: If you've been reading this blog for a while, you'd know that I have a thing for nuts...all kinds. One of the best things that I like about this superfood is its ability to improve the quality of sleep. Walnuts has melatonin - a hormone that regulates sleep. Walnuts also aid in weight loss because it's high in fiber and increases metabolism.
7/Orange
Superpower: We all know that that orange is high in Vit. C. What many are not aware is its ability to normalize blood sugar level. It can also make you look young! How? By kicking off skin-damaging free radicals through its powerful antioxidants.
8/Flaxseed
Superpower: I put half a spoonful in my cup of joe every single day. I learned this from Gwyneth Paltrow years ago. She gives her kids a spoonful of flaxseed oil every morning, too. I tried it, but don't have the will power to commit. I like the powder version better. Here are some of the reasons why it's super:
- It regulates bowel movement
- Improves depression
- Contains lignans that reduces the risk of prostate and breast cancer
