The strip at Tuscany, McKinley Hill is full of old and new restaurants that are worthy of more than one visit. I was fortunate enough to try some during the Secret Foodies Tour. One of the restos that stood out for me is Main Street. They serve simple, affordable, and delectable dishes that will leave a good mark in your palate.
The menu highlights both Canadian and American cuisines - specifically, the Pacific Northwest cities
of Vancouver and Seattle.
Poutine PhP 145 |
Poutine is a traditional Canadian dish composed of crispy French fries, creamy gravy, and peppered with deliciously tangy cheese curds. This haunts my dreams until this day. It is that good! I usually wait a couple of minutes for the curds to melt a little before I dig in. It's just so much better that way.
Mussels with Herb Beer Broth and Fries PhP 280 |
The aroma of the broth will definitely arouse your belly and make it growl with anticipation. The mussels were very fresh, firm, and slightly sweet.
Crab Cakes with Mango Salsa PhP 220 |
The worst kind of crab cakes are those made with canned crab meat. It is just downright sad; especially here in PHL where fresh crabs can be easily sourced. Main Street uses fresh crab meat for this delicious dish. The filling is flavorful and the crab meat is very evident with every bite. It had the right balance of binder and crab meat. I would still prefer lump crab cakes over batter-covered ones, but the taste of this dish will make you forget your preference.
Buttermilk Fried Chicken PhP 260 |
This dish is a definite must-try at Main Street! The flavor is excellent! The coating itself is packed with everything good that you can do without the garlic cream sauce. But don't do that! Don't ditch the sauce because that will elevate the fried chicken in a whole new level! If you don't like steamed white rice {what's wrong with you?}, you can substitute it with fries.
Classic Fish and Chips PhP 240 |
Those strips of fish are huge for PHL standard and can be shared by two. Fresh and juicy dory fillet is enveloped by crispy fried batter. The tartar sauce is not beyond the ordinary. What makes this dish extra good for me is the obvious freshness of the fish.
Porkchop PhP 280 |
A smokey, rich-tasting barbecue sauce is smothered on top of a thick grilled porkchop and served with herb rice and grilled asparagus spears. The taste is unquestionably good, but I find the meat a bit tough.
Grilled Steak PhP 360 |
Rosemary-rubbed, tender, and thinly sliced flank steak lies on a bed of herb rice and topped with sunny-side-up egg. The egg makes the dish rich and creamy. My doneness level was medium well - always has been. The second time I went to Main Street, I requested for medium rare. Either one is good for me.
Wagyu Burger PhP 390 |
I think I can safely say that this burger deserves a standing ovation, and probably, a slow clap. A thick pile of flavor-packed Kitayama patties, sweet white onions, grilled tomatoes, melted cheese, and strips of bacon comprises the in-between. The whole thing is doused with their special house sauce. This is a non-negotiable dish at Main Street. You just go there, order this, and eat.
Homemade Ice Cream PhP 95 |
Even their dessert's good, I kid you not! They serve homemade frozen beauties of various flavors - S'mores, Malted Milk, Milk and Cookie, and Maple Bacon. My favorite are S'mores and Malted Milk. They're very smooth, luscious, and creamy!
