Shine Bakery & Cafe: Beyond Sweet Treats

"Family-friendly, sweet, fantastical universe" is Shine Bakery & Cafe's tagline. Based on what we had, I think it's more than just that.

Shine Bakery & Cafe is the brainchild of chefs Rob and Sunshine Pengson ~ the latter is a pastry whiz. The place has a relaxed, non-pretentious, kid-friendly atmosphere with fun and interesting gewgaws adorning the walls.

I was actually excited to try their cake. I can go for years without ice cream, chocolates, and doughnuts, but not cakes. Cakes, I love! But first, burgers, fries, chili dog, and rice!

umami fries

Non-poetically, I can say that these fries were simply yummy! I thought that they're going to be too salty, but they turned out fine. The outer layer of these fresh-cut fries were extra crispy while the center was moist and tender. The lightly sweet bourbon aioli dip perfectly complemented the seasoned fries. FYI: that dip was quite addicting!

foie gras burger
Foie Gras Burger  PhP 598

Injecting foie gras as a burger component is always great in my book. It just ups the flavor by about, I don't know, a thousand percent? Great quality beef with obvious lack of unnecessary grease. Add to that fact is the freshly made buttery brioche bun. The flavors were created to a point of excess. I don't know if that's good or bad. One thing's for sure though, I enjoyed this one immensely.

mushroom fondue burger

Impression-wise, it's quite unassuming {just mushrooms, burger patty, and mornay sauce}; but once you take a bite, oh my gawd! That's one good sandwich! The burger was big on flavor and size. I especially like the extra crunchy potato chips. They make their own, by the way.

spam and egg cheeseburger
Spam and Egg Cheeseburger  PhP 398

Another flavor-packed offering at Shine Bakery and Cafe! It's a top-notch burger patty ladened with a slice of the canned pork meat, sunny side-up egg, lettuce, and drenched with mornay sauce. Is this worth the extra pounds? Yes!

chili dog
Chili Dog

Juicy hot dog with crisp, smokey casing and topped with chili that had a nice kick! The delicious, pillowy bun provided extra satisfaction.

chicken adobo
Chicken Adobo  PhP 365

I just had a bite-size preview of this one because this was my friend's chosen dish for the day. I wanted to eat all, but friendship prevailed. Anyway, that was all it took for me to consider this as a must-try at Shine Bakery & Cafe. It's actually a departure from the traditional adobo. I love the crisp outer layer, the moisture-packed, flavorful interior, and the on-the-side sauce. Will definitely order this when I go back to SB & C.

beef salpicao

The meat was flavorsome {the marinade penetrated the beef really well} and the accompanying multigrain rice pilaf was amazing. I think that the beef was cooked a little longer than usual because it was not that tender. Just to be on the safe side, it's better to request for your preferred doneness.

ALL THINGS GOOD cookies, Peanut Butter and Jelly, Chocolate Truffle Cookies

Don't miss the gooey ATG {All Things Good} cookies! It's the stuff of legends. I bought a couple to go. They were still delicious after five days sans refrigeration. According to the talented Chef Gio of SB & C, this is a nod to Momofuku Milk Bar's Compost Cookies. The texture was awesome, and the taste was damn magnificent! It was a bit of a toss-up between the Chocolate Truffle Cookie and this. The latter prevailed.

Shine Bakery & Cafe Elvis Cake
Elvis Cake  PhP 1440/whole and PhP 180/slice

If you want a Banana Cake that's extra moist, look no further! In-between the layers are chocolate fudge and peanut butter frosting. Yep, too sinful, but I loved it! I especially love it when paired with a good cup of coffee.
