If we let our youngest son pick the restaurant every time we eat out, we'd probably have wings by now. He likes Wee Nam Kee's Hainanese Chicken so much! I really don't have any qualms about his choice because they do serve a good one, but man cannot live on Hainanese Chicken alone.
Wee Nam Kee recently revamped their menu - they took out a few and replaced it with better dishes, in my humble opinion. Hainanese Chicken what? I'm kidding. I still like that a lot. By the way, all the dishes are built for sharing. If you want to try a lot of dishes, it's better to go with a big group.
Hainanese Chicken Curry Noodles PhP 225 {solo} / PhP 368 {sharing} |
It's just fitting to start this short list with Wee Nam Kee's signature dish {Hainanese Chicken}; well, a curry soup version of it. This was a standout bowl of flavors that gives the noodles a good character. I think that it's spiced a little too much; my friends find the level just right though.
Prawn Paste Chicken Wings PhP 218 |
Fried just the way I like it! The crust was thoroughly crisped out, but it wasn't oily. The meat remained tender and juicy. I hate when it's all dried out due to extreme frying. The prawn paste made the whole thing incredibly tasty.
Salted Egg Chinese Style Fried Chicken PhP 295 |
This was definitely my favorite amongst all. You'd think salted egg {with it's strong flavor} would easily dominate the whole dish making it, well, a complete stress of the obvious. It wasn't. The salted egg was more of a booster to the fresh chicken flavor. The mix was really good: salty, spicy, and tangy. I like that the fullness of the taste was cut away by a little heat.
Sauteed Beef Fillet in Sate Sauce PhP 395 |
Tender beef bathed heavily by rich, piquant sate sauce. The sauce wasn't that thick which is good, for me. This would've been too overly satiating had the sauce been thick.
Spicy Sambal Rice Noodles PhP 295 |
Don't let the noodles sit too long on the table. Give it a good toss as soon as it arrives so that all the flavors will be evenly absorbed. A delicious dish with nary an overpowering seasoning. This is a big bowl, by the way; probably good for five people.
Lemongrass Fish Fillet Stew PhP 325 |
The dish's name would immediately clue you in on its aroma. The firm-flesh fish ensconced by a light batter and joined by fresh veggies in a hearty, heavy, and flavorsome liquid.
Pineapple Fried Rice with Pork Floss PhP 250 |
This can be a one-dish meal. They didn't scrimp on the ingredients. It has shrimps, pork chunks, egg, scallion, sausage, and pork floss with a sweet essence of pineapple. Very good!
Wok-Fried Chicken Cashew and Sun-Dried Chili PhP 270 |
A blend of good textures, aroma {the kind that wafts though the air}, and flavors. The delicious, deep-amber, sweet and spicy sauce hugged each coated nugget well. This is perfect with steamed white rice, but also good on its own.
