Lent is a time of penance and self-denial - meaning, seven Fridays of no meat plus Ash Wednesday. I've never had a problem with this because I've always loved seafood. But for meat lovers, the struggle is real, and looking for a good place that has equally good Lenten specials is another endeavor altogether. I found one recently. Brotzeit has a good selection that goes far beyond the good ol' fish and chips.
Brotzeit is a portmanteau of the German words "brot" {bread} and "zeit" {time}. The German restaurant and bier bar specializes in Bavarian cuisine and whole lot of premium beers! The Singapore-born restaurant's first Manila branch is located at Shangri-La Mall. Recently, they opened a new branch at the ground floor of Glorietta 4 {where Pizza Hut used to be}. Brotzeit's dishes are mostly beer-infused and each have a recommended beer pairing.

Our palates had a field day and our tongues had a good exercise with the pronunciation of the dishes' names. Seriously, I can't say them properly to save my life! First up: Fischklopse Sassnitzer Art. See? Above are Saasnitz-style fish balls livened up with a tang via the accompanying lemon butter sauce. Upon the suggestion of Brotzeit's Culinary Director, Chef Ivan Maminta, a wheat beer such as the Schneider Weisse Tap 1 Meine Blondes best pairs with this type of dish. He's right! It brought out the noted flavors of the seafood rather than drown it.

Kräuterkruste Kabeljaus PhP 590 |
The malty sharpness of the beer-infused risotto is what makes this dish extra interesting. The herb-crusted cod fish with a nick of the parmesan sable and the glutinous grain makes for a perfect forkful every single time. The suggested beer for this one is Schneider Weisse Tap 4 Mein Grünes.

Meerfruchtesfleckerin PhP 450 |
Al dente pieces of farfelle are coated with a light sauce charged with the succulent flavors of shrimp. Two crispy coated shrimps lies on top of this wonderful dish. A serving is actually sufficient enough for two. Weihenstephan lager best complements this one.
Thunfisch PhP 450 |
This was the dish I enjoyed the most. It's flavorful, but not excessively so for you to lose interest after a few mouthfuls. Washed down with Paulaner Original Dunkel Lager, this dish becomes even more pleasing!
Schokoladenfondue PhP 990 |
Speaking of pleasing, Brotzeit's Schokoladenfondue can definitely be filed under the given category. The Valrhona dark chocolate and a "special something" {the Chef refused to tell despite much badgering} mixture was heavenly! The fruits were fresh and delicious, but the Emperor Cake definitely upstaged the rest. Really, really tasty! This is available until Valentine's Day 2015 along with the Kasefondue - Cheese fondue with tenderloin chunks, Bavarian sausages, pretzels, and olives.
