K & L Cafe Brings Baguio Food Experience to Manila

"What do they serve at K & L Cafe?", I asked one of my foodie crews, Richard. "Baguio food, mostly," he replied. That sealed the deal. I immediately said yes. You see, Baguio and I have a mutual love affair. I will choose it over a beach-y spot any day; in return, it gives me a cool atmosphere, pleasing pine scent, and good food!

K & L Cafe is the brainchild of the same kids {they look really young!} behind Blushing Cupcakes: Karen and Loren. During our convo, I told them that I envy the natural blush that the people of Baguio sport. I have to fake mine all the time. Anyhoo, Karen said that it's the reason behind the name of their cupcakes.

They were supposed to name the latest cafe Blushing too, but someone suggested that they name it something else to deviate it from the cupcake brand. Karen does the baking while Loren is the one in charge of K & L's menu. Here are a few of their dishes that are really good versions of down-home creations:

Hoooboy! These sticks were fantastic! Don't wait too long before you take a bite, though. You want the molten cheese to ooze out of its cave effortlessly as you devour it. Each stick is not meager in size, by the way. For the price and the taste, this appetizer is a big must-try!

K and L Cafe Lola Nena's Adobong Puti

Adobo is one of the proverbial dishes of the Filipinos. It's really a popular local dish; so much so that when someone markets Pinoy food, this would be part of the top 3 list. Goop even created their own version of the humble adobo! No single adobo will top another in this part of the world. Each Filipino that can cook will tell you that his/her version is the best! That's just the way it is. Mine is!

K & L Cafe's version from a family-owned recipe is a hit with me. It's different from the usual adobo having been devoid of soy sauce, hence the name Adobong Puti {meaning 'white'}. Sweet and sour unseats salty in this case. A halved salted egg ensures extra salty taste for those who need a fix.

The rice is the thing that anchors that whole dish! I love x 100 Baguio's mountain red rice! They mix it with white one in this case. It's an abomination!!! I love it better unmixed.

It's far better than the conventional red rice; even the brown one, and the black one, too! Am I missing a color? Anyway, it doesn't taste like mashed cardboard for one. Secondly, it's healthy!

Hellooooo, gorgeous!! Everything that glistens is gold, don't you think? The pork was flavorful, and with the condiments, it became extra enjoyable. I would ask them to fry the chunks further next time. Maybe, slice off the fats and crisp them out some more.

Daddy's Bourbon American Ribs

Slow-cooked slab of ribs is one of K & L Cafe's suggested munch. The tender meat is lathered with a good sauce that creates another level of richness. An extra sauce is provided on the side just in case you want to amp it up some more.

Longganisa Locale

I couldn't get enough of K & L's Longganisa Locale pasta! The toothsome strings were anointed with loads of longganisa bits and garlic. You'd want to scoop the left over oil with the bread after. Let it soak all that flavorful amber liquid for a better gastro experience!

Longganisa Up North  PhP 199

Baguio and Vigan longganisa together in a single dish is extraordinary! One is slightly sweet while the other is pepped up with garlic, but both are packed with an awesome factor. This comes with the delicious mountain red rice, eggs {cooked the way you want}, and slices of fresh tomato and cucumber.

Okay, listen up, guys - you've got to try K & L's Ultimate Red Velvet Pancakes {PhP 295}! That crimson mount was heaven on earth!! Since we take our time when taking snaps, especially me, I expected the pancake to be a little bit dry because it's been sitting there for a while. Lo and behold! The gorgeous flapjack was still moist and just plain amazing! It's huge, too! Two can have a go at it. Not to be missed as well are K and L's Salted Caramel Brownie and the Banana Toffee Cupcake. They have an extensive list of the latter to choose from, so you will definitely get your fill.

Refreshments include these three homemade juices: Strawberry Calamansi {PhP 95}, Baguio Honey & Calamansi Iced Tea {PhP 85}, and Lemonade with Sagada Orange {PhP 95}

And then there's this...

Above is my friend Eugene's Peppermint Vanilla Latte {PhP 105}. I got the Maple Caramel Latte {PhP 105}. That was delicious! K & L Cafe uses Sagada coffee beans. With or without the fancy accoutrements, those beans are sinfully tasty! I load up on those beans whenever I go to Baguio. To love your own product is a fine thing, especially if it's this good.
