New year, new chances, and most importantly, new dishes! Modern Shanghai, the Chinese restaurant that offers good food without burning a hole in our pockets, recently added a few new dishes in their menu. Masterminded by Bistro Group's Corporate Chef, Josh Boutwood, the dishes have deep roots and historical significance from diverse Chinese regions

We had the tried and admired favorites first before the Grand Dine-asty dishes starting with the Shandong-Style Shredded Chicken. If the tenderness of the meat doesn't get to you instantly, the black vinegar concoction with coriander and mince garlic will. This is a very good starter that can be shared by two.

Savory soup plus a ball of flavorful filling covered by an al dente skin! I can easily eat one order of Modern Shanghai's Signature Xiao Long Bao in one go. I prefer it half submerged in the accompanying vinegar sauce with slivers of ginger before going in for the kill. They have a pan-fried version, too. I have yet to try that one, though.

The Soup Noodles with Braised Beef in Brown Sauce is one of Modern Shanghai's top sellers. This was a hearty noodle dish that gave my taste buds an enjoyable wallop. 

Old Fashioned Shandong Buns (2 pcs.)  PhP 128

My friends said that these remind them of a dinosaur's bony plates. I think it resembles a shark's fin or maybe a perfectly combed pompadour. Whatever it is, at PhP 128, these large steam-fried buns are a steal. It's filled with slightly sweet meat and minced veggies. It doesn't come with a sauce. That's the sauce for the Xiao Long Bao. I just added it for aesthetic purposes.

This was a very filling dish with loads of flavors thrown in. There's the crab stick strings, different kinds of mushrooms, veggies, and large chunks of tofu. 

Chocolate Buchi  PhP 188 {4 pcs.}

Buchi is one of my most loved snacks as a kid. These glutinous dumplings were one of the many reasons why I was so fat. These sticky balls filled with indulging flavors were really good! Both were delicious, but I prefer the Cookies and Cream over the Chocolate.
