Rooted in Nature: Makati Shangri-La Goes Green

I'm not an advocate for Greenpeace movement or a saint when it comes to being eco-conscious, but I do believe in green consumerism. Makati Shangri-La, in line with the chain's aim to operate sustainably, is joining the call for this positive eco change! They recently launched their global campaign called Rooted in Nature, and I'm really excited to share this with all of you!

Rooted in Nature targets green consumerism and boosts the economy as well by using products that comes from small, sustainable local farms. For the whole month of April this year, the different Makati Shangri-La food outlets {Inagiku, Sage Bespoke Grill, Shang Palace, Circles Event Cafe} will feature sustainable, prix fixe menu that showcases the best food products in the country. They're not only eco-friendly dishes, they're really delicious, too!

We all want Momma Nature to be happy, but let's face it, the food being delicious is still a go/no-go factor; and if you value heuristic, you'd be pleased to know that since the offerings come in a fixed price, your dining experience won't add up to a scary total.

Baguio's Garden

Makati Shangri-La's Executive Pastry Chef, Romain Renard, did a fantastic job with this dessert named Baguio's Garden - most of the ingredients are from the City of Pines. It's light, not cloyingly sweet, and super cute! Somehow, it reminds me of Mario Brothers.

inagiku

Makati Shangri-La source seafood from Meliomar - a local processing and export partner of Artesmar. Artesmar is a fishery improvement project that helps small-scale fisheries develop a more sustainable business and better fishing practices. Not only that, they support the livelihood of local fishing communities as well!

Knowing that important info made me appreciate what Inagiku's Executive Chef {Yoshio Ishikawa} has prepared for us more! Fantastic! Simply fantastic!

Rooted in Nature Makati Shangri-La Inagiku Steamed Local Sea Bass in Salt Block

Steamed Local Sea Bass in Salt Block - the delicate slices of the steamed fish are protected by seaweed to avoid being tainted with salt. The unveiling of the fish itself made me anticipate with great delight. The taste made me happier! The seaweed covering gave a memorable appeal to the ultra fresh and tender fish. So good!

Above are just some of Makati Shangri-La's Shang Palace's contributions to the Rooted in Nature campaign. Executive Chef Richard Thong Moon Hong teased our willing palates with slightly spicy Roasted and Boiled Peanuts {sourced from Isabela, Pangasinan, La Union, Quirino, Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Aurora, Albay, and Iloilo} and the savory King Prawn Salad {prepared with prawns from Roxas}. We washed them all down with a refreshing Ripe Mango Juice. The mangoes, like the rest, are sourced from the best homegrown producers. They're from Guimaras Island, also known as the Mango Country.

The regional food system of acquiring the best sustainable products is also very much evident at Circles Event Cafe. Quality vegetables from Bukidnon, poultry from Pamora Farm in Garreta, Malagos Farm's dairy products, chocolates from Davao, and Gourmet Farm's coffee are just a few that the Circles' chefs uses.

What I love most about this campaign is the awareness Makati Shangri-La is creating. I think consumers are more mindful about what they are eating nowadays. It is important to know where our food is coming from and what impact {environment, economic, ethics} it is causing to everything around us. Environmentalism and all that "Save Mother Earth! Save Mother Earth" thing is not just a trend. It is a reality. I'm not a scientist, but I think that everything is interconnected somehow. What we tend to ignore now will plague us someday in a big way.
