End the craving! The iconic New York food cart is finally here in Manila, and it is The Halal Guys' first international branch! Founded in 1990 by partners Muhammed Abouelenein, Ahmed Elsaka, and Abdelbaset Elsayed, the humble food cart along 53rd and 6th rose through the ranks to become the best street food in the Big Apple according to Yelp. If you're in doubt about the quality of their food, you can always check out the loooong line for good measure.
My husband's aunt introduced us to this some 15 years ago. I was floored from the get-go! It's inexpensive and really delicious. A unicorn trait when it comes to food. Hubs have long anticipated the arrival of In-N-Out to the PHL shores. I like it, but I've never been a huge fan of burgers. It has always been one-off itch for me. The Halal Guys is what I was really waiting for! Now this, I can have every single day! The only difference between the NY version and the PHL version {for me} is that in the latter, you get to devour the famed rice and meat combo with a spoon and fork, and not the usual spork.
Jaime Daez of Fully Booked is the one responsible for bringing the world-famous food cart home. A second branch is in the works, by the way. It's gonna be at BGC. And since the streets' names there are similar {not sure if they're patterned after} to NY streets, I hope they place it along 6th ave as a nod to the original branch.
The Halal Guys PHL is the first restaurant to be awarded a Halal Certificate by HDIP, members of the World Halal Food Council, and is the leading Halal certifying body in the country. The HDIP is the only certifying body in the Philippines recognized by Jakim in Malaysia, Muis in Singapore, Cicot of Thailand, as well as, Ifanca of America.
New York Size Chicken Over Rice Platter PhP 469 |
Fine hunks of chicken, turmeric rice, tomatoes, and lettuce are ladened with The Halal Guys' famous white sauce! Triangles of toasted pita bread are also included. You can ask for extra white sauce {PhP 25} and the hot sauce {PhP 15}.
Use the hot sauce sparingly - which translates to just a few drops. That thing will make you breath fire! If you wanna get back at someone, daring him/her to eat half the packet of The Halal Guys' hot sauce is a great way to get even. Just a thought.
If you're not that hungry, you'll do well with just the regular size {PhP 339} or maybe the small one {PhP 239}. But once you get that first mouthful, you're gonna wish you ordered the NY size, though. I'm seriously craving for this now. I kid you not!
Falafel Sandwich Small PhP 175 |
Highly pliable, slightly chewy, and perfectly toasty pita bread is stuffed with those delicious deep-fried round mounds of mashed chickpeas. It's delicious! It also has the standard add-ons such as chopped lettuce, tomatoes, and of course, the white sauce!
New York Size Gyro over Rice Platter PhP 469 |
The Gyro over Rice is just as smashing! If you're ambivalent on which meat to choose, go for the combo. You can either have the chicken and gyro over rice, chicken and falafel, or gyro and falafel. Any which one you choose is gooood!
